Beginning this May, we plan to travel to four different countries across the globe, spending two months in each place as we seek to witness and participate in the Kingdom of God that is breaking into our world through the lives of Christians. In each place, we are accessing the local, native church community through friends who have been living and working in those areas for several years. Our first of four destinations is Nairobi, Kenya, where Andre and Coline live.
Andre and Coline knew before they met each other that their lives were destined for Christian life overseas, especially in developing countries. After getting married, they chose to spend their first days as a married couple on a mission trip in Ethiopia.
Growing up as a first generation Haitian American with a medical condition that had little access to good healthcare, Coline has always had a huge passion for medicine, and specifically for providing care to people who would be without it otherwise. Because of this, Coline desired to pursue medicine as a means to love and heal those in need. Their original plan was for Coline to earn a doctorate in the states to then have greater opportunities to serve overseas, but finances fell through and she was forced to withdraw from classes. At first, this was devastating and confusing, but God soon provided a different avenue for them to live their dream of being missionaries through a church planting organization called The Timothy Initiative.
TTI exists to equip and train native Christians to plant churches in their communities. Nairobi became an opportunity for Andre when TTI needed a regional director in Africa to oversee the logistics and integrity of their training and churches throughout eastern Africa. Much sooner than they had anticipated, Andre and Coline found themselves moving their lives to Kenya in January 2012. Additionally, Coline was able to re-enroll in medical school at the University of Nairobi, and is expected to earn her doctorate by 2020. Meanwhile, she is working to establish a ministry called Medical Discipleship. The inspiration for this ministry came to Coline when she realized how many people in rural areas are suffering and even dying from illnesses that could be remedied with just a little information. During her time off from studies, she pursues respected women in rural villages (which can be as far as eight hours away from a hospital or clinic) and trains them in skills like CPR and other basic medical knowledge. In turn, these women are able to pass on these tools to other members of their community.
In addition to our documentary work, we hope to serve our dear friends by creating video to help communicate their ministry in Africa for the purposes of awareness and fundraising, as well as putting together videos to be used as an educational tool in Coline’s Medical Discipleship training. Andre and Coline have beautiful hearts for people because of their love for Jesus, and through their lives His Kingdom of restoration is pouring into the people and world around them. We are so excited to be doing life with them and to learn from them during our time in Kenya!
We invite you to get to know them more at their website, Our African Life. â€
